Dear A and C,

You are growing up in a time of immense change. In the last two years alone, we’ve learned so much about big and important issues including climate change and the systemic racism that runs through our institutions. In some cases, we are learning things for the first time, right alongside you, while unlearning a lot of what we were told and taught by our parents and the education system we grew up in.

Many days, it feels pretty dark, and the challenges we’re facing seem insurmountable. But I can see the light, too, when I see your kindness, and the way you care for animals and nature.

Your dad and I are doing everything we can to fix some of these things. And we aren’t alone; collective action is finally starting to happen. The world is working on it, and we won’t give up.

More Messages to the Future

Dear June and Colin,

I’m sad and angry that collectively more has not been done to this date. And that still with such dire warnings, obvious impacts, those in power are acting far too slowly.

To my children,

I hope that the fervor that is building continues to build and spread and that the world has made progress to minimize the effects of our past actions.

Dear Leo,

Last week I took you to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Dear Grandchildren — August and any others who were born after him

I joined millions of other people who wrote letters and made calls urging our leaders to do more to care for the planet.

Dear sons,

I’ve been so busy since 2012 working towards getting a price on carbon.

A love letter to my son

I hope this year is a real turning point and by the time you’re a teenager, your life is powered almost entirely by clean energy like solar and wind.

Dear Students,

My act of love will be to use all the power I have, during the rest of my life, to stop climate change.

Dear Great Grandchildren,

If you are reading this, you probably inherited my fascination with ancestry, and the way it uncovers incredible stories of unlikely survival.

Fe,

As one push of a button can set a spinner in motion, so too can the actions of one in creating a world that allows you to thrive, to giggle, to love.

To future Geof,

Cool, now that your jetpack is put away in your garage where you keep your flying car; how did the aliens save us from our own destruction? Did they have this hyper advance vacuum that just sucks all the greenhouse gases out of our atmosphere?

Dear Gabriel,

One day ten or twenty years from now, when you look back from the future, you will be able to clearly see the entire path.

Dear Sinchi,

The world is changing and it is happening fast.
