dear future people (:

These are weird times right now. For my whole life my generation has learned about all these crazy, revolutionary times in history class but have never experienced anything like it personally. And now, all of a sudden, we’ve found ourselves in the middle of chaos – climate change caused by irresponsible, unsustainable living, a leader of our country who doesn’t seem to care and way more than a handful of people turning a blind eye to it. Fortunately, there are a lot of people who do care and are fighting for change!

One of the best things about life is the forest and nature and the sense of freedom that comes with being there. Some of my best memories take place outside and a lot of them involve music. That’s my hope for future generations is that we take care of our earth and are still able to enjoy outdoor festivals. There is no better feeling than getting lost in the woods with some of your best friends listening to some of the best music and I hope people are still able to experience that. In fact, I hope to working with festivals to help make them as sustainable as possible.

Now is the time for my generation to prove themselves of how great we can really be, of how hard we can fight for ourselves and, more importantly, you guys and our home. I hope the fight is successful, I can feel the positivity of all these wonderful people around me and I think it will be!

I hope that feeling of success and positivity continues on to the future. I hope that people are still enjoying the wonders that nature has to offer. I hope nature is still bringing people together and not dividing them further apart.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Madeleine,

First of all I hope we succeeded in our dream that yours is a better world than the world of 2021. Today, the forests are burning, the sea levels are rising and wild weather is everywhere. But we are working hard and I’m confident we will succeed.

Dear Eleanor,

It seems silly to saddle yourself with guilt for something that hasn’t happened yet. I don’t want to do that. As of today, I don’t really feel guilty. I guess I just want to make sure I keep doing more, so that when you read this, and ask what I’ve done since then, I can still feel good about my efforts.

I am 19 years old, and I am angry.

Anya,

All you can do is your best. You can encourage the same in others. You can admit your mistakes and those of your ancestors. You can learn from them, and help however you can. I’ll do the same. I promise.
