BATMAN SAYS, “LISTEN!”

Dear Trudeau,

I commend you for your efforts to safe our country Canada and the world. If we all work together, we can all become BATMANS or J KERs. Personally, I would rather be a J KER, but I can be wherever you need me to be. So this is Andy Ruffett asking you, Justin, where do we go from here? How can I help you save the world and our country?

With writes, -Andy Ruffett

Dear Llewyn, beloved grandson …

I can only say that I devoted myself to doing as much as I could to make it better, to provide for a just transition, and to fight those forces that continued to exploit the Eaarth with extractive methods, methods that always also included oppressing some people–because those doing the oppression believed that they were better and deserved more.

To my beloved granddaughters, Margaret and Caroline,

Growing up in Germany, I often wondered what my parents had done to oppose the Nazi regime in the 1930’s that led to WWII.  I was so disappointed when I found out how passive they had been. For me, this was formative.

To the generation after mine,

But when you encounter that resistance–and you will, regularly–know that you must respond just how we have had to these past 50 years. With love, and sternness, and most of all, courage. Because that is what the resistance fears the most. We who came before you promise that we will do the same while we wait for you. Know that you will never be alone.
