To My Future Descendants,

I am writing you from a world that is divided and dying.

Even though it is well known that carbon emissions are radically altering the climate of the planet that we live on, causing rising temperatures and melting ice, threatening the very existence of the human race on this planet. Those who are causing the problem have too much of a vested interest in continuing the industry that makes them wealthy to really care about you in our future.

There is enough food on this planet for everyone to eat, and yet many starve, there are enough resources to distribute clean water to all, and yet many die of thirst. Similarly, the technology and labor-power exists to solve this problem in front of us and yet the people who control that power refuse to solve it.

That is why I believe that if you are reading this and climate change is indeed an issue of the past, that it will have been through an intervention of the masses, and not the decisions of the elite minority that currently are holding us back, that this problem was finally solved.

Yet, I am writing to you from a world yet with hope to save itself.

Even as I write this, people from the parts of the world that will be the most affected by the coming cataclysm are rising up to try to take the power they need to fight back. From Mexico to Syria, From India to the Philippines there is a revolt against the powers that be, but it is a young revolution and only in the early stages. It is still possible that this revolt could be crushed as previous ones have been.

If we are to solve the problem by the time that you are reading this, the revolt must grow and become a truly global movement, the global south must rise up and demand with the voice of a giant economic freedom and environmental justice.

This is our only hope.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Grandchildren,

I hope we can pass on a better place to live so that my grandchildren and their future children can enjoy the beauty of nature that our wonderful God has given us.

Dear Future Afnan,

You should make a time machine and come back to past and solve all the problems.

Dear Eleanor,

It seems silly to saddle yourself with guilt for something that hasn’t happened yet. I don’t want to do that. As of today, I don’t really feel guilty. I guess I just want to make sure I keep doing more, so that when you read this, and ask what I’ve done since then, I can still feel good about my efforts.

Dear Annalyse and Greyson,

See people can say they care about climate change, but caring is not action.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise my next vehicle will be an EV.

People of tomorrow,

Your path will only be as clear tomorrow as we have made it for you today.

Dear Donatella,

We ran through the woods laughing, crying, and living.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to purchase carbon offsets when we fly.

Dear Jack,

Right now you are only a little over 5 weeks old, but you have truly changed my whole world. Your Mom and I always say that we thought we loved before you were born, but now that you have come into the world and we met you, our ability to love just expanded exponentially.

Dear Rosie,

But when you are reading this years from now, by the light of a solar powered lamp, know that your dad, mom and millions of others who burned brightly with love for our kids did what we could, when we knew the stakes.

I promise to plant more flowers.

To all the children of the future and those who love them,

While there is still breath in this body I will give of my soul and my time and energy to making the world a better place, for you, and all the beautiful living beings of this world.
