For the pale blue dot we live on, a precious beauty, I try to help.

To my child,

Well my child, ‘the future’s uncertain and the end is always near’. I think a quote from the Doors is a good way to start this! Who knows, by the time this letter is released I may not even be alive anymore. The date today is the 03 March 2017. I’m 19 years old. It is certainly a time of change more than ever before; some good, though sadly most is not. This last flourish of the populist politics will be long dead by the time this letter is seen, but the sad change to our planet is something that can never be reversed. Should I apologise? On behalf of my generation? Well, being the realist I am, I feel that there is plenty of good change happening too. And that widespread oil and gas will be a thing of the past very soon.

It’s interesting to consider the overall significance of us; as a planet and a species. One could say we are totally inconsequential and unimportant in comparison to the size of the universe or alternatively, that our lives and life are the only thing that truly matters. I like to stand at the centre of these. On one hand, yes we are only part of a universe that we are unable to grasp in scale and beauty but a diamond found in a coal mine is only made more valuable for it’s rarity. On the other hand, yes, life is the only thing that matters because it is all that can matter. At least to us. The meaning of life is to live it!

I suppose this may have gone a bit off topic, but simply because this is the philosophy I hold so dear. In all actions I have done and am yet to do, these are the seeds of wisdom I bury in my heart. I try to do the small things I can for the moment. But future is always our next breathe, until it isn’t. And I intend to do it for the greater good. For the pale blue dot we live on, a precious beauty, I try to help.

Dear Elliot and Alana,

But being truthful, I know we are not yet on the path that will lead to the change that is needed; but it is visible.

For my children,

If we haven’t done enough and the world you’re living on is apocalyptic or if you’re living on another planet then I’m deeply sorry and just know that I believe in you and I know that you are both strong and smart enough to handle anything.

To my daughters,

In order for you two be happy and healthy, we all need to work hard to prevent climate change.
