To my beloved grandchildren Sam, Carlo and Price,

I am writing this in December 2017 but you will not see it until 2050 when each of you are in your 40’s. As you hopefully remember my family including the three of you were the most important people in my life. I used to “knock on wood” often and say a silent prayer for each of you and I would always include the “world” as I knew a healthy life for each of you needed a healthy world

For me the most important issue of the day in 2017 was our environment. As you may remember me telling you, I had been concerned about the environmental situation of our world since I was in college. When I retired in 2015 at the age of 75 I decided to spend all my time volunteering for environmental organizations like Elders Climate Action, 350.org, Organizing for Action, and many local groups. I was not a politician and could not accomplish sweeping changes but I knew that each individual action taken counted. I wish I could be with you in 2050 when you view this message, but my fervent hope is that ultimately the world listened to the scientists and environmental activists and made the world healthy and safe for you and all future children!

Sent with much love,

Mar Mar

More Messages to the Future

To my precious children,

As you’ve grown older, I’ve become increasingly aware that protecting you means more than ensuring your short-term safety. It also means ensuring that you’ll have a safe planet to live on.

Dear future niece or nephew,

We loved hiking, camping, biking, swimming and playing as kids together.

To my great-great grandchildren,

I don’t know your name
or even if you’re alive,
but I’m doing all I can
to make sure you survive.

I’m your great- great grandmother
who lived a century ago
in a world far different
from the one you must know.

To anyone who has heard my music,

I promise to care about the planet.

To my dearest Gabriel,

What gives me hope is what is yet to come, what you will experience in your lifetime.

Vitória,

Antes de realizar qualquer ação pense no meio ambiente para que suas atitudes sejam pautadas na sustentabilidade. Assim o seu pensar e agir localmente poderão resvalar na escala global.

To my Dad,

I hope on this Father’s Day, my 24th birthday, and the rest of days, we remember that the most basic part of life is living happy with the ones we love. Acting every day against climate change will allow us to keep that simple piece of humanity.

Dear Anabelle and Bruce,

My desire is for clean air, clean water, rich soil, and healthy nutritious food for you and all children always everywhere.

Dear Tomorrow,

And, if this summer has taught me anything, I am content (because I have to be) living in this limbo, this seemingly endless waiting for the opportunity to change, when really the opportunity exists within our very selves all along.

Dear Lincoln,

I wanted to let you know that in 2019 that there were real struggles with the health of our planet.

My dearest Paloma Bear,

I want the very best for you and for generations to come. There is only one planet earth. Your mommy and I will make a genuine effort to make an impact to protect it for you.

Dear Erica and Matthew,

I want you to be able to bring your kids to Tahoe and experience the same clarity that you had as a child.
