Dear mini Xiao,

When you read this today, I hope that I will have made some inroads in sustainable farming and production for the textile industry. I spent years at my first full time job as a vegetables buyer. One of my most valuable learnings was visiting farmers and factories across Asia and understanding ways in which we could work together to make growing and producing vegetables sustainable. I was sad to leave that job, but I took with me a passion to care about industries and how we participate in them sustainably so they last into the future, and our planet lasts too. Textiles is a deeply polluting industry, where production has moved to countries in the midst of phenomenal economic growth. There’s a real dilemma between supporting a country’s growth while keeping their environment clean. This is something I am grappling with now. By 2050, I hope I will have made some inroads in traceability of the supply chain, particularly in cotton in China, and have started working with producers and thought leaders on moving to greener materials. Outside of work, I have been a lover of the ocean and the life in it. I was an avid scuba diver and free diver who saw amazing creatures in the water. I want to you be able to see these creatures too, so I have committed to one project a year related to marine conservation.

More Messages to the Future

My Dear Grandchildren,

In writing this letter to you, I am searching for ways to make my connection and commitment to you more present in my current experience

I promise to plant more flowers.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to use a reusable water bottle.

Dear child,

The journey of humanity does not take us to Mars like the world now likes to believe. It takes us home to our true self where there is no separate self. Where we are all one. You know all this. Look after yourself my child, look after your brother, your friends, your children, all the animals and the whole planet. Love them like there is no tomorrow.

Dear Me of Tomorrow,

I plan to plant more things this spring, as we do every year in our garden.

Fe,

As one push of a button can set a spinner in motion, so too can the actions of one in creating a world that allows you to thrive, to giggle, to love.

To my future children,

I am doing everything I can because I want the footprint that I leave behind to be my feet in the sand on a beach and not a carbon one.

Dear Tomorrow and Dearest Lex,

I do believe that the collective power of everyone’s best efforts can curb the worst effects of climate change, and provide you with a more stable and secure future.

Our Shared Promise

I will act today so you may have a healthy earth to live on.

Dear sons,

I’ve been so busy since 2012 working towards getting a price on carbon.

Dear Ezmae,

As I write this, I consider giving up as it sometimes seems that all is lost. But then I think of you.
