Dear Fiona and Cora,

It’s your Uncle. We’ve dealt you a pretty bad hand in terms of the world you’re due to inherit. I’m sorry. It isn’t your fault. I want you both to grow up in a world that is sustainable, lush with biodiversity, and fully capable of fostering a life that both of you and every other child deserves. Me, your mom, and your dad enjoyed that, and I want that you for too. I want it for everyone in the world. In 2020 I’m going to start spending my free time with climate activist groups. I’m going to contact my elected officials on a regular basis. I’m going to vote people into office that take the climate crisis seriously and take actionable steps to counter it. I’m going to do everything I can for both of you, and every other child that deserves a future-and that, of course, is all of them.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Future Ryan,

I promise to be a knight in the campaign of truth seeking.

dear tomorrow,

I hope that the state of the environment becomes a part of everyday discourse.

To My Future Children,

Most importantly, I hope you live in a world where science is taken seriously and fact is clearly distinguished from fiction.

Dear Kai and Leah,

I want you to feel awestruck like I do. It is important to feel small sometimes, to feel the weight of reality, to recognize the scale of a challenge, to see where you fit and what you are up against. This is the case with climate change.

Dear Earth,

I will keep the air clean so everyone can see the sunset.

Dear Sadie,

You are young and have a rich future ahead of you. I am retired and aiming for a high quality of cultural life and comfort with whatever time remains to me. I do not want to see a world whose elders sacrifice your future for their short-term needs and personal gain. So it’s up to you and me to speak out.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to become more educated on the global issues that face populations I can’t see

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to take my bike everywhere. Taking Golden Gate Transit to SF tonight.

Dear AC,

I think a lot about where the right place to live is.

Dear Samuel, Willa, and Ben,

To the core of my being, and only through the power of community, I will honor the voices of the youth who are pleading, “Don’t burn my future.” Samuel, Willa, and Ben, your little voices I know, will join that chorus soon enough.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to ride more and drive less.
