I wish you all the best and always make sure that you can be proud of yourself and don’t need status-symbols for feeling nice.

To my Kids,

Dear Kids,

I want to save your future. Because of this, I founded treesarekeys.com

You know me, I am your father being 23 years old. I worry about the greed of so many people. To me it seems like they don’t care about the tomorrow. They have to work so much and have no time to think about their behaviour. I think it’s hard to focus on one certain thing today. There are so many things, which you can get information about, that you can’t concentrate on the important things of life. Like Nature, Love, Family.

Every second relationship gets divorced. The people buy stuff they don’t really need to impress people they don’t really like. They are not aware about their impact. The awareness is missing today.

What are the best status-symbols? big cars, big house, diamonds, expensive brands.
When you think twice about status-symbols, you get to know, that big cars are not good for the atmosphere at the moment. We have a huge problem with CO2 because of so many cars. The people need to move fast from the one spot to the next one. They have no time for riding the bus or train or sharing their cars.

50% of our used energy is used for our houses. 50 years ago in 1950 it was normal that you were living in one house with your grandma, grandpa, mom, dad in one house. Today every person needs his own castle, like 5 rooms for 3 people. When people would think about that situation, we would not need so many houses and not so much energy. And why don’t we build our houses from wood? We have so much of it, its grows again, after its cut in a sustainable way and trees are planted again. Massive wood walls are so much better with warmth insulation then stone. The next thing is, that in countries like India, there are problems getting enough sand for concrete because so much is needed for building skyscapers.

Diamonds, what is so special about these stones. They’ve got many facettes, but what else? When you have them, you are rich. But why? What do they say about the person, who has them and is proud of having them? Maybe some of them do, but I think many don’t care about child labour and slavery. So they put sign on their hands, necks, that they don’t care about other people. I don’t get that. They are just stones.

Expensive brands are just expensive because of the marketing. Marketing is ok, as long as it informs people about a product. But in many ways it works like brainwash. The people identify themselves with the people in the advertisement and want to be like them. When you are not proud of you own body and you own behavior, you are easier to catch for these marketing-people.

So my kids, these are just some of my thoughts.

At the moment I am starting my start-ip TreesAreKeys.com. At the moment I am putting fair-trade-shops on my site. When people click on a shop and buy something, I get a commission. 80% of my surplus I donate to afforesting projects. I will see, how it works in future and I hope I can do some good impact with that to keep a good future for you.

I wish you all the best and always make sure that you can be proud of yourself and don’t need status-symbols for feeling nice. Make sports for being sexy 😉 and be fair to others. Have fun, but don’t make fun of others. Try to understand people, when they act differently to what you would do. There is not just one truth in the world. Ask people, but don’t believe everything they say. Think about the words and get a second and a third point of view.

I am sure you will make your way fine. You will be great and it will be worth it to fight for your future.

I love you.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Future Earth,

I promise to promote the growth of clean energy, like solar… For the sake of my grandchildren.

dear tomorrow,

I hope that the state of the environment becomes a part of everyday discourse.

Dear Eleanor,

You are so small. So innocent. So beautiful. For you and for everyone else, I will try harder.

Dear Lucy,

The clock ticks, time passes, and the earth and all of its inhabitants move closer to dangerous boundaries we can dimly discern but cannot see clearly.

We will look back on our time here and ask, “What did I do?”

If we truly live our present moment, maybe you’ll have a future.

Dear Seamus and Tuva,

So it’s 2050. If the good people are winning the greater struggle, fossil fuels are a shamefully long chapter of the past, and there has been a full scale awakening to the need for only renewable, clean energy.

Dear 2050,

Our planet is crazy. I pledge to be an innovator to make sustainable living real.

Dear Future Self,

It was 2020, the year I realized that life is fragile—not just mine, but the entire planet—through immense consumption, pollution, greediness, ignorance, false bliss. This wasn’t the way I wanted to live my life, so I promise to actively make the change.

To our sweet grandson Caleb,

We want a safe and beautiful world for you, little Caleb, and for your children and grandchildren. We promise to do our part.

Dear Nafia,

I also hope that your previous prayers have been answered. The way you wanted to create green jobs for your fellow city dwellers have been fulfilled already.

Dear Future Grandchild,

We can learn a lot about how to treat others from stories that have been passed from generation to generation.

Loved One,

That we all have a role to play no matter how small, we all can make a difference.
