Dear future self,

It is currently the year 2018. Climate change is a serious issue and everyone needs to do better in doing their part in keeping our planet healthy. It makes me happy when I see companies and businesses “going green”. For example, many businesses support going paperless for things such as bills and receipts. A few years ago, I would see foam containers at many restaurants but now I’ve seen that most have been replaced with compostable containers. Although, I have met many people who don’t believe in global warming or who simply don’t care about helping the environment. It’s really saddening and I try my best to help educate people about how important it is to do what they can to help the environment, especially with my friends and family. Whenever I see someone drinking a plastic water bottle or using plastic utensils at home, I remind them that it’s more environmentally friendly to use reusable items. Sometimes, I offer to wash the reusable utensils to show how important it really is. I make sure to always pick up litter and that my friends don’t litter as well.

I can’t imagine how Earth how will be in 2050, but I really hope that it gets better. I hope that it’s still safe to live in and that new rules and laws have been implemented. I hope that restaurants are required to get their produce supply locally. I hope that plastic straws, utensils, and water bottles are banned. I hope that most cars are eco-friendly and that less gasoline is being used than today. I really hope that more people learn the importance of how our daily actions can affect the world in our future. Some people don’t think it affects them directly, but it can because this is the world that your children and grandchildren will live in. We can reduce global warming if everyone makes the effort to help.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Ari and Levi,

Luckily, we have figured out ways to build things without making the air dirty, and we are trying very hard to get more people to switch over to this new way as fast as we can.

Dear Me of Tomorrow,

I plan to plant more things this spring, as we do every year in our garden.

Dear Victoria, sugar pie honey bunch, chiquita loquita,

How can I look at your bright eyes and light dance and tell you we are facing a war?

Dear Tomorrow,

And, if this summer has taught me anything, I am content (because I have to be) living in this limbo, this seemingly endless waiting for the opportunity to change, when really the opportunity exists within our very selves all along.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will use less fossil fuels.

To my Beloved Future Children,

Be fearless – do not be afraid to talk to each other and do not be afraid to fail.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to include the trees and animals in all my decisions.

Dear Luna,

I will never give up on you, on humanity, on the future.

I promise to plant trees and to turn off the lights.

Dear Seamus and Tuva,

So it’s 2050. If the good people are winning the greater struggle, fossil fuels are a shamefully long chapter of the past, and there has been a full scale awakening to the need for only renewable, clean energy.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will bring permaculture designs to my community.

For a child I am yet to know,

We are fighting for a shared cause, inspired by our strong and unwavering dedication to preserve the beauty and wonder of our natural world for our children, our grandchildren and their children, and for countless generations to come.
