The first step would be in overcoming ourselves. Because whether we end up fading into obscurity, or thriving in prosperity, we will overcome ourselves.

To what we’ve overcome.

Look at me! I am a single, insignificant line of text in this sea of messages. Look at this picture. This is you. This is me. This is us. We are but a speck of dust floating through the cold, unforgiving void of space.

If I am gone, there will be a hundred other letters just like me that echo my legacy. But if we are gone, who will echo ours?

Some say that throughout the billions of years of time in this infinite span of space, countless alien civilizations have risen and collapsed long before us, their unheard whimpers fading into the very same void of black nothingness that sits above your head when you look up at the night sky.

But we can be better than them, because look at all we’ve overcame. Planes that overcame land, farms that overcame hunger, and medicines that will overcome death itself! Isn’t it ironic that as we are on the verge of overcoming nature, nature may overcome us?

No. If worse comes to worse, it wouldn’t be because nature overcame us, it would be because we overcame ourselves. But we could make things better. The first step would be in overcoming ourselves. Because whether we end up fading into obscurity, or thriving in prosperity, we will overcome ourselves.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

My climate promise is to stop using electricity too much.

Queridos nietas/nietos,

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will bring permaculture designs to my community.

Dear Before The Flood team,

We can all be aware and sensitized to the problem, so that we are ready to embrace the solutions that will come our way. In doing so, we can all be part of the solution.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to ride more and drive less.

Dear Tomorrow,

The transformation of human consciousness

To my Beloved Future Children,

Be fearless – do not be afraid to talk to each other and do not be afraid to fail.

Dear Future Family,

As I’m sitting here trying to think of the best words to say to you all, I am thinking of one major thing: that I can only hope that you all get to experience the incredible beauty created by our planet.

Dear James,

More importantly, what are we doing to better our planet and everyone who lives in it?

To my children – Chase, Maya and Harlan

I hope that we manage to change the system really soon, while there is still time. So that you are not left with the mess, and trying to fix something that you didn’t cause. I hope we figured out a way to be kind, and caring for others who will suffer more than us. A way to let go of the greed and look at ways we can help others rather than take from them.

We will look back on our time here and ask, “What did I do?”

If we truly live our present moment, maybe you’ll have a future.
