To my Future Loved One and Children,

Hello! This is your wife and mother wayyy back in early 2017!

At this time, I am only 13 years old and am in LOVE with a K Pop band named BTS! Members: Kim Namjoon (Rap Monster), Kim Seokjin (Jin), Min Yoongi (Suga), Jung Hoseok (J Hope), Park Jimin (Jimin), Kim Taehyung (V) and Jeon Jungkook (Jungkook).

Though, I have not contributed to the Before The Flood project or anything helpful in general. I do believe in the cause of fighting climate change. And though it is a long way to go from age 13 to age 46 and it’s a stretch from being a middle school student to a parent, I really think I would regret not doing this.

Ever since I was little, I always was the only one in my entire family who loved the outdoors. I was always active and loved looking at trees and looking at scenery. As a kid, I remember when I visited my grandparents. There was a forest to the right of the road leading to their condo. I would always enjoy giving bananas and food to the monkeys. I would get teased by my family saying “Go be with your kind.” (They were not being mean, my Chinese zodiac is a monkey). And I would always love coming home to KL to see the monkeys.

But, one day they slowly started to disappear.

When I came back a few years later, I saw a huge change in the nostalgic road. The forest next to it was gone. It was completely cut down and I could see it being cut down. I could see all the monkeys running out of the fallen trees. And I could feel my heart break. Obviously being a curious 8 year old, I asked my dad what was going on. He just said “They’re doing that to make your chips, to make our cars work and to make houses.” And I felt so bad inside, thinking it was all my fault, I burst out in tears. Of course to comfort me, he said “It’s not your fault. You’re still a child.” But, I know for a fact that I contributed to that forest being cut down. The whole World did. And I would like to apologize on their behalf.

My favorite picture of BTS shows them waiting at a bus stop in front of the beautiful ocean. Though, the picture may be beautiful the meaning behind it not so much. This was why I loved BTS so much. The meaning behind the bus stop was that they were either ‘Waiting for a new beginning’ OR ‘Waiting for someone to come back’. I can relate that to this World right now. To me it means both. I’m waiting for a new beginning for our Earth. Where it is beautiful, and there are forests where animals can live freely. And waiting for our beautiful environment to go back to how it was before. Full of trees, flowers, and hey, maybe the forest full of monkeys near my grandparents house.

Though 2050 is a long way to go, we still have a lot of things to do to help our environment in 33 years. So, everyone should do something to help the cause. And as ARMYs would say: FIGHTING!

More Messages to the Future

To my dear son,

Last year most of the world’s reefs turned white at some point, but because it was underwater you and your friends didn’t see.

To my children – Chase, Maya and Harlan

I hope that we manage to change the system really soon, while there is still time. So that you are not left with the mess, and trying to fix something that you didn’t cause. I hope we figured out a way to be kind, and caring for others who will suffer more than us. A way to let go of the greed and look at ways we can help others rather than take from them.

Dear me,

Remember how passionate you felt at 20, I hope you keep that passion in you and are still working on climate 30 years from now.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to ask five of my friends to plant trees.

Dear Tomorrow,

It wasn’t about Him, it was about Us. And this isn’t about Me, it’s about You. And it won’t be about You, it will be about Them.
