Dear Future Child,

I hope that you are able to appreciate the world the same way I did as a kid. I hope that you are able to enjoy all the seasons, summer, spring, fall and winter. I loved, and still love to play in the snow, go for a hike in the fall, look at all the different colored leaves and hang out with friends on the beach. I love to be outside, appreciate the fresh air and explore new places. I love the freeing feeling of swimming in the ocean and riding the waves. I hope that the generations before you didn’t ruin these experiences for you and you can appreciate the world and everything it has to offer. Climate change is very serious and I promise I will do everything I can to make sure that you live in the same beautiful world that I do. Climate change is something that has been going on for thousands of years now, but recently it has gotten significantly worse. There are more natural disasters, droughts, famines and fires all over the world. This is all because people have not cared enough to change their lifestyles to make their world a better place. There is so much pollution and greenhouse gasses that are dramatically changing our planet, and I hope to be able to make a slight change for you. I will do everything I can to ensure you live in a safe, healthy environment. I will inform people about what the future holds and teach them how to make a change.

From,
Your Mom

More Messages to the Future

Dear future me,

I am 19 years old, and I am angry.

To my daughter,

The climate is quite dynamic these days. Dhaka has dust and warm in this spring.

Dear Elliot and Alana,

But being truthful, I know we are not yet on the path that will lead to the change that is needed; but it is visible.

Dear Lila

So today, my strong and spunky girl, I promise you this: I will stay vigilant and flexible. I will spread the word.

To our future generations,

I want you to know that some of us do care and we are working towards a better future for you.

Dear Tomorrow,

I haven’t met you yet, but I already know you deserve a better tomorrow.

To the future generations,

I will stand on the streets, in the courts, and in the schools to encourage awareness and empathy for the earth.

Dear Zhengqing Gao,

Fortunately, you didn’t get injured while the wildfire burned your school.

Dear Ezmae,

As I write this, I consider giving up as it sometimes seems that all is lost. But then I think of you.

Dear friends,

We need to rethink our consumption habits in order to reduce the impacts on the environment.

My Mini & Lou,

Since I first sat down with these words, a pandemic has erupted. Racial violence is reaching a fever pitch and protests are raging across the nation. It feels like the planet is succumbing to entropy, slipping further into chaos. But I write to you from a time of shifting tides.

People of tomorrow,

Your path will only be as clear tomorrow as we have made it for you today.
