Dear Amelia,

My heart is breaking with worry about the world you will live in when you are grown. It seems like we are tipping (have tipped) into such dangerous and challenging times, and so little separates us from big pain and fear. I am doing my best to work with farms so that, in our region, producers can continue to grow food and heat, and that we have clean water. I hope it comes to something. I am sorry if it does not.

My commitment to you is that I will teach you how to grow your own food, so you will not be hungry. I will help you learn how to make things with your hands. I will show you how to invest in your community, so that when things are hard the community will catch you.

I love you always.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to never use a plastic straw.

I want to tell you a story. Yes, another one.

Mankind has always been able to deal with the greatest challenges it’s faced and this will not be the exception. My message to you is: find that passion and give it your all. ‘Till your legs give out.

Dear future generations,

It’s never too late to make a difference. Our actions have very real consequences. We can educate ourselves, learn from our mistakes, and take action. We can hold companies like big oil and big plastic accountable for their negative impacts on the environment. We can educate ourselves and others about what causes climate change and what actions we as individuals can take to lower our carbon footprints.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to take my bike everywhere. Taking Golden Gate Transit to SF tonight.

Dear Tomorrow,

My promise is to continue to dedicate my life, my business, and my future to creating cultures that embrace environmental action not only for our own good, but the good of the countless other species hurting from climate change.

Dear Maya,

Maya, my love, I promise to be courageous. I promise that when I face a decision, I will think of how it will impact you and your future. I promise that I’ll also step outside my individual decisions and add my weight to the forces that shift culture and systems.
