To Whom it May Concern,

It is 2017 and we have a climate change denier as president. Our government actively removed information regarding the changing climate and how seriously it affects all of us on earth, our water, our food, our natural resources are all at greater risk than ever before. As our population grows we must make more from our ever depleting resources. I am sad to say I cannot guarantee the world will look the same for you as it did for me, what treasures will be lost between now and then I cannot say for certain. I hope by the time this reaches you climate change and it’s solutions will become a mainstream topic. If not for the sake of maintaining this earth than for the immediate danger it poses. I hope climate change has not been pushed under the rug. I promise you between now and then I will be critical of myself and my actions, critical of the behaviors and practices of the companies I choose to support and critical of my government, demanding through personal and community political action that they hold us accountable as a nation of people and corporations. I will take what I have learned so far and apply it to my life and the choices I make and seek out new knowledge and solutions and do what I can to share this knowledge with others. While my change may only be individual I know small changes can make a difference and my dollars carry weight. I will, along with many others continue to be thoughtful and critical regarding our world and always act with the future in mind. We make up a growing body of concerned citizens looking for avenues to voice our concerns, develop sustainable practices and spend our dollars responsibly. I hope this action combined with the many other efforts underway and even the efforts that have not been imagined yet help retain some of the beauty I have enjoyed for you to see for yourself.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to live a car-free lifestyle.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will eat vegan, organic, locally grown, and seasonal.

Dear Tomorrow,

My climate promise is to stop using electricity too much.

Dearest Finlay,

I hope you are healthy and happy and that you feel supported by the ecosystem around you because we are all deeply truly interconnected. We depend on the earth to take care of us, and nature needs us to take care of her in turn. We all need each other.

Dear Spike, Loulou and Yoshua,

I’m going to start a campaign to try to convince everybody in the Netherlands to not eat meat one day a week.

I promise to take shorter showers.

Dear Students,

I imagine at this point we have dropped our addiction to coal, gas, and oil and that our environment has made a turn for the better with the solar, wind, and other unimagined (at this point) alternative energy choices are in place.

Dear Tara,

Each of us only has so much power and the problem is HUGE, but I worked at this every day.

Dear Tomorrow,

The road I learned to ride my bike on, the field where I kicked my first soccer ball, and the park I ate my first ice cream cone at, could all be gone.

Dear A and C,

You are growing up in a time of immense change. In the last two years alone, we’ve learned so much about big and important issues including climate change and the systemic racism that runs through our institutions.

Dear Anabelle and Bruce,

My desire is for clean air, clean water, rich soil, and healthy nutritious food for you and all children always everywhere.

My dear Honeys,

I think every parent believes that their child’s future is worth protecting – because I know the power of this force in me and what I am willing to do.
