To my grandchildren,

Hello,

I’m writing in hopes that I’ve taught you all well. Regardless, I’m assuming it’s gotten hotter in the future and I’m also assuming that (given I’m still around) I’m complaining that it’s too gosh darn hot. At the rate we’re going, I’m expecting the world to be doing pretty poorly by 2050, in regards to environmental concerns. There are people out there today (2020) that are concerned about this, and it’s no small amount. But past generations aren’t too happy about our concern. There’s a lot of politics around climate change and it’s usually not too great (some people don’t even believe that climate is changing!!!), but I’m assuming that hasn’t changed much by 2050 :(. Anyways, I hope that California still has its beauty. I hope that summers are hot, but forgiving. I hope the winters are cool, but not freezing.

Most of all, I just hope you all care about the Earth the way you should.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Nieces and Nephews,

I tried.

Dear Daughter,

I want you to be prepared for the world that the generations before you are creating for you. I love you Lucienne, and I will not give up. I will push you and teach you not to give up, either, even if others around you do.

Dear Tomorrow,

No plastic straws, no water bottles, shop local, no meat.

Dear Tomorrow,

And, if this summer has taught me anything, I am content (because I have to be) living in this limbo, this seemingly endless waiting for the opportunity to change, when really the opportunity exists within our very selves all along.

AMORI MIEI EMMA DOMINGA E MAMMA AURELIE

Mamma e Papà cercano insieme sempre di darti il meglio però anche tu dovrai fare la tua parte nel mondo.

Dear Lila

So today, my strong and spunky girl, I promise you this: I will stay vigilant and flexible. I will spread the word.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will only use renewable energy.

For my children,

If we haven’t done enough and the world you’re living on is apocalyptic or if you’re living on another planet then I’m deeply sorry and just know that I believe in you and I know that you are both strong and smart enough to handle anything.

Dear Future Ryan,

I promise to be a knight in the campaign of truth seeking.

To my great-great grandchildren,

I don’t know your name
or even if you’re alive,
but I’m doing all I can
to make sure you survive.

I’m your great- great grandmother
who lived a century ago
in a world far different
from the one you must know.

My grandchildren,

I promise to do my very best to educate your parents as best I can.

Dear Amara and Uma,

Maybe you heard about bats? Bats, the carriers of this disease that spread among us like wild fire. I love bats. When I was your age today, sitting in the evening on the back terrace of your grandparent’s home in Ibiza, hundreds of bats would play, dance and sing among the trees.
