To my future dear family,

Every day I struggle to be a better person, for deserving the title of daughter of nature, so that my Mother can feel proud to have me as her daughter. In these 24 years on earth, I have never consciously contaminated; My parents taught me from my earliest years that I should never throw my trash on the floor, that I should turn off the lights every time I left a room, that my showers might be short, that I would not let the water run unless it really were necessary.

I have been conscious with my Mother Earth during these short 24 years. I love the place where I live, I love clean air, to escape, to talk with nature and to feel heard by her. I love the land in the same way that a poet can love its greatest inspirational muse. I admire every day the beauty of the landscapes I have traveled, which I have captured in photos on each of my walks, and I admire each of those landscapes that one day I hope to meet. I would hate every future day of my existence if all that wonder with which I have grown someday disappeared.

I fervently believe in the kindness and respect of the human being for life. That is why I sincerely hope that the world can reason, that you can finish the work that at this moment, the people who love the earth, the ecosystem and every living being on this planet, are doing right now.

I know that I have made many mistakes in my life.  Perhaps I will never be leading or donating large amounts of money to sustain a huge change, but I do my part. I have personally been in charge of speaking and sharing my ideals with many people. I want the world to stop being so selfish, I hope that human beings can stop thinking only about its own species. I want the human race to love every species as if they were brothers, so that the human being can, with his thought, act for those who do not have the capacity to reason, but who have nevertheless shown tremendous superiority to us: animals.

For now I will continue to do my part. I hope that someday, the years give me the reason, all the damage we have done to the planet in some way can reverse. I want my children, grandchildren and all future generations to enjoy everything that exists on earth today. I want us to progress so much and that responsibility for our environment will be part of your DNA.  Above all, someday when I look back I want to feel proud of the person I was. There is still a lot of work to be done and I hope you are the fruit of all that.

More Messages to the Future

Querido amanhã,

Em fim, espero que você receba essa mensagem, e entenda o quão pequenos nos somos e como é importante preservar o planeta terra.

Our Promise

I will turn my gas transmission into an electric car!

Dear Llewyn, beloved grandson …

I can only say that I devoted myself to doing as much as I could to make it better, to provide for a just transition, and to fight those forces that continued to exploit the Eaarth with extractive methods, methods that always also included oppressing some people–because those doing the oppression believed that they were better and deserved more.

Dear Tomorrow,

I am so sorry we didn’t realize this predicament sooner.

To My Grandchildren,

It’s my hope that the following will be helpful as you navigate your futures.  These are the confessions of a climate activist:

To our sweet grandson Caleb,

We want a safe and beautiful world for you, little Caleb, and for your children and grandchildren. We promise to do our part.

To all the people here on earth,

Who knows what the future would look like? or what will happened in the future? No one knows right? That’s why it it’s scary because we don’t know what lies ahead. We couldn’t stop the future but we can always change it.

Anya,

All you can do is your best. You can encourage the same in others. You can admit your mistakes and those of your ancestors. You can learn from them, and help however you can. I’ll do the same. I promise.

Dear Before The Flood team,

We can all be aware and sensitized to the problem, so that we are ready to embrace the solutions that will come our way. In doing so, we can all be part of the solution.

Jeremy M,

My promise is to work to protest carbon emissions.

People of tomorrow,

Your path will only be as clear tomorrow as we have made it for you today.

To My Future Child(ren),

The fact that you are reading this means that you would know the answer to a question that has kept me up at night more often than I would like to admit: Did I make you proud?
