To my future child,

I spent every summer of my life at Ledgewood, my dad’s family’s summer house in the Adirondack mountains. Some of my best memories are from those summers: hiking in the mountains, swimming in the waterfalls, reading on the porch, spending time with family. I can’t imagine my life without these experiences, and nature plays an integral role in all of them. As climate change becomes an increasingly bigger threat, I worry that beautiful places like this will slowly stop existing. The existence and well-being of nature is not only essential for humanity, but for enriched and happy lives as well. In the future, I hope to take you and my sister’s children to this house every summer, just like when I was a kid. I want to be able to show you all of the things that we did and continue to make new memories while being surrounded by nature. I promise to continue to speak out against climate change and do everything I can do reduce my environmental impact. I promise to always consider climate change when voting, consuming, and participating in society.

From,

James

More Messages to the Future

To the Three most Beautiful Souls I could ever Know,

I promise to keep your Love at the forefront of my every move. I will make personal changes and I will learn more, so that I can contribute to a healthier environment in a meaningful way.

Dear You Tomorrow,

What we failed to do, at least early on, was to see how important it was to put those solutions together. To combine into a way forward.

To my dearest Gabriel,

What gives me hope is what is yet to come, what you will experience in your lifetime.

Dear A and C,

You are growing up in a time of immense change. In the last two years alone, we’ve learned so much about big and important issues including climate change and the systemic racism that runs through our institutions.

I love you Earth.

Meus filhos,

Espero que vcs tb encontrem ,de alguma forma,um caminho para colaborarem com Nossa Mãe Terra, bjs eternos.

Dear Future Self,

It was 2020, the year I realized that life is fragile—not just mine, but the entire planet—through immense consumption, pollution, greediness, ignorance, false bliss. This wasn’t the way I wanted to live my life, so I promise to actively make the change.

Dear Daughter,

Tonight at bedtime, you asked, seemingly out of nowhere, “why are the glaciers disappearing?”

Dear Grown up Alton and Dot,

The most important thing in my life is you, which means that as your mom – I am doing my very best to make sure that when you read this letter, Earth is a cleaner and safer place for you and your children.

To older Rochelle,

You should’ve reduced your carbon footprint, should be using some source of renewable energy and be a vegetarian by now.

Dear Evan,

We want your future family to enjoy the same beautiful places we enjoyed.

Dear Tomorrow,

No plastic straws, no water bottles, shop local, no meat.
