To My Children,

I write you this letter in hopes for a better today, tomorrow, and future. It’s currently May 13, 2018. The time is 11:43pm. I writing this because the current state of the planet is on my mind. It’s been on my mind for quite some time. During the week of May 6-11, I was completely changed for the better. I attended a 6 day camp (Leadershape) focused on leadership with 60 other ECU students much like myself. At Leadershape, I along with others each found a vision that reflected on our inner passions. Mine was one focused on the environment, Latinx, and indigenous people of Latin America. It was a vision born on Day 3 of Leadershape, a day I will never forget. As I write to you now, I am still focusing on my vision in hopes that one day it will come true. Currently, I am doing research on the environment and ways I can help. I’ve been planting seeds along with my mom. We currently have 12 plants all ranging from succulents, sunflowers, bachelor buttons, and basil. I just hope the bee population will improve and that the people of this world will come to the realization that climate change is very much real. I wish you the best.

love,

Michelle Giron Morales

More Messages to the Future

Dear Erica and Matthew,

I want you to be able to bring your kids to Tahoe and experience the same clarity that you had as a child.

To my child,

For the pale blue dot we live on, a precious beauty, I try to help.

Dear Daughter,

Tonight at bedtime, you asked, seemingly out of nowhere, “why are the glaciers disappearing?”

To my children – Chase, Maya and Harlan

I hope that we manage to change the system really soon, while there is still time. So that you are not left with the mess, and trying to fix something that you didn’t cause. I hope we figured out a way to be kind, and caring for others who will suffer more than us. A way to let go of the greed and look at ways we can help others rather than take from them.

Dear Tara,

Each of us only has so much power and the problem is HUGE, but I worked at this every day.

Dearest Finlay,

I hope you are healthy and happy and that you feel supported by the ecosystem around you because we are all deeply truly interconnected. We depend on the earth to take care of us, and nature needs us to take care of her in turn. We all need each other.

Dear Tomorrow,

Don’t use plastic straws!

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to buy organic food and run more and bike more! (I could use the exercise.)

Dear Llewyn, beloved grandson …

I can only say that I devoted myself to doing as much as I could to make it better, to provide for a just transition, and to fight those forces that continued to exploit the Eaarth with extractive methods, methods that always also included oppressing some people–because those doing the oppression believed that they were better and deserved more.

Dear Children,

I wish I had a crystal ball and could peep into it to see you all happy and safe in a world that nourishes you and that is also nourished by you, a world where the resources it provides are as valued as the people in it and not frittered away by greed and power.

Dear Future Today,

Here in California we’re starting to recognize our climate changing the natural world around us.

Dear Future Self,

I hope you got your dream job of using your business degree to reduce co2 emissions and promote sustainable energy.
