Letter to the world’s children,

[This letter was also submitted in Spanish.]

Children, today some of you are less than 15 years old. In other cases, you have been not born yet and like all of humanity there are many things that you don’t know.

How far we have advanced in the last 150 years of industrial development! We have arrived at formidable levels of development, which perhaps would not have been possible without sacrificing part of our beloved nature, but thanks to this we have reached a point where this sacrifice has allowed us today to have the ability to understand and change what we have been doing, to become sustainable and responsible inhabitants for the only home we know so far. It is important to remember that despite all our advances, today we are practically the same society as that of 1000 or even 2000 years ago, especially in regard to actions applied for environmental conservation.

It is not an easy task to carry out, it requires a lot of intellectual capacity and vision to understand what is happening and what could happen in the next few years. But it requires even more gifts to be able to explain it and make others understand this vision. Today we have not succeeded, despite great efforts of people at all levels, we have not achieved the level of humanity’s consciousness and education necessary to make our development sustainable, and the same can be said for the survival of our species in the coming centuries. However we can say that we have started and that there is a hope, albeit small, that we can achieve it. It will take much more effort, and time will tell if we can decrease and reverse the damage we are doing today or at least keep our species free of extinction until we can reach another planet where our species can live, and maybe save some of you.

I believe that there are two aspects that we must work hard today to advance. If by the time you read this message we have already achieved both of them it is because, in my view, you already have the foundation needed to achieve even more important progress:

1.- We must formalize the concept of “global consciousness and / or intelligence” of humanity seeing humanity as a single and entire organism, to be able to study and chronologize our behavior and thus establish a plan of action that allows us to improve our intellectual abilities in a global manner.

2.- It is important to make the majority of people understand that it doesn’t matter how much money or goods we can have and leave behind! If we do not stop global warming, rising sea levels, declining freshwater reserves and the pollution of the seas, among others, there will be no place on the planet where you can live better than we do today, and it will be even worse for subsequent generations. It doesn’t make sense to continue leaving behind things that can never be enjoyed as we do today because they have been obtained in an unsustainable way.

You may wonder what you can do to truly help bring a change, the truth is that anything you do whenever you can will make me proud of you, and I’ll know that this message achieved something.

There is nothing more to do than to apologize for the inheritance that we have left, a world and a home in destruction and decay, which even the largest amounts of money cannot repair without the passing of many generations. I hope that, at least, because of the experience and teachings that so many years of deterioration have left behind we will know how to transmit these lessons, and maintain the hope we have today for a better world for our future generations.

Abundance with ignorance generates scarcity. Scarcity with knowledge generates abundance.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Gabriel,

A message from co-founder Jill Kubit:
Writing letters to our kids about climate change is hard. It should be.

Dear Ya’Ash,

There are many paths to Truth, but regardless of your faith or ideology, one truth is above all else: Life must continue.

Dear Nieces and Nephews,

I tried.

Dear Gabriel,

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – The Lorax

Dear Amara and Uma,

Maybe you heard about bats? Bats, the carriers of this disease that spread among us like wild fire. I love bats. When I was your age today, sitting in the evening on the back terrace of your grandparent’s home in Ibiza, hundreds of bats would play, dance and sing among the trees.

Dear Future Me,

I promise that I will change my behavior to benefit our trees.

To My Daughter and Future Grandchildren,

There are so many more things that we can do together to help our Earth from the damage that has been done, and I am so excited to teach you.

To my darling ones,

And it’s not that I don’t care. I care deeply. For you three, and the families I hope you will have one day; for the many beautiful places I have had the privilege to know, places which take my breath away, that fill my heart with a bursting joy and connectedness to something so much greater than I, places I know may be quite different when you are my age

To my precious children,

As you’ve grown older, I’ve become increasingly aware that protecting you means more than ensuring your short-term safety. It also means ensuring that you’ll have a safe planet to live on.

Dear fantastic,

We as the human race are smarter than this struggle at hand and need to rise above large corporate interests and confusion on this topic.

Dear Eleanor,

Send new updated messages to your loved ones at DearTomorrow

To my future Niece,

While I will work my hardest to create any positive change I can, you must continue this quest. You cannot give up hope, and you must always remember that the beauty on this Earth is worth saving.
