I tried to teach you of the importance of being satisfied with what you had within your hands.

Dear Yasmine,

Today is wonderful. Like yesterday and the day when you will read my letter. Because every day lived in bliss is a wonderful day. I tried to teach you that loving others is a bliss, helping others is a bliss, sharing with others is a bliss. Now it is time to pass what you learned to the others. Our climate suffered for years from our ignorance. We were, as human beings, so selfish that we overloaded our environment with plastics in the ocean, air pollution, soil pollution, etc. We drifted from following our ancestors’ clean pathway, worst than that, we transformed their green lands into landfills. We were not able to control our love of money. So we started constructing and constructing until we hid the sky with our iron structures. We applied technologies to destruct the human kind by increasing the number of cars on the road. We become very strong, looking for eternity, more clever but more consumers than ever. I tried to teach you of the importance of being satisfied with what you had within your hands and by  contributing to the restoration of simple life based on respecting our mother nature. I know that I will have time till 2050 to teach you more about our forests, oceans, air, about camping, smelling our soil, being sustainable and adore eating healthy food. I hope we will enjoy together all those moments.

You are my blood, you are my soul, I love you and I promise you that we will spend more time together camping so you will be more in touch with nature.

With love, your father (HY)

More Messages to the Future

Dear grandchild,

There is a place on this planet called the Amazon, and I don’t mean the online shopping site (is that still a thing in your time?).

I promise to take shorter showers.

To the Future Generations,

I look at my baby niece today. The newest member of our family, just 3 days old. What will be left for her and her grandchildren?

My darlings, Juno & Vaeda,

You ask insightful questions, and together we learn about the mysterious world we inhabit.

Dear Jeremy,

We had a lot in common obviously, and our concern for the planet we live on was one of the many things we bonded over.

Dear future me,

I’m doing this work because I see it as the best way to save and improve as many lives as possible. I’m doing it so you, 2050 Ryan, can look at yourself in the mirror. And so you can tell your kids and grandkids someday that you did everything you could.

My Mini & Lou,

Since I first sat down with these words, a pandemic has erupted. Racial violence is reaching a fever pitch and protests are raging across the nation. It feels like the planet is succumbing to entropy, slipping further into chaos. But I write to you from a time of shifting tides.

Dear Future Earth,

I promise to promote the growth of clean energy, like solar… For the sake of my grandchildren.

Para minha querida filha, Vitória,

Consegue compreender que estamos aqui de passagem e que temos por obrigação apenas tomar emprestado, evitado excessos e principalmente agradecer.

Dear future generations,

Past generations took all the trees, polluted all the water, fished all the fish, and hunted all the animals so that there’s almost nothing nice left.

Dear Eleanor,

You are so small. So innocent. So beautiful. For you and for everyone else, I will try harder.

Dear Future Self,

More than getting through a global pandemic that has already taken hundreds of thousands of lives around the world, our true feat is even larger: to secure our long-term health and the health of the ecosystems upon which we depend for life. To do that, we have to cut our emissions in half in the next ten years, and continue to reduce it beyond that. And to succeed in that, we need to fundamentally shift the way we do EVERYTHING.
