Dear people of 2050,

Today, we are seeing a global pandemic that has affected our lives and hopefully our future. Today, we have been ordered to continue to stay indoors, to wear masks at all times outside, and to practice social distancing. This has impacted our environment, especially towards air pollution. Right now because of low travel, our air is cleaner than this time last year. The Earth can breath as throughout the world NO2 and CO2 are reportedly down. This could be the beginning of a new start. I hope in the year 2050, we have taken the global threat of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions seriously. I hope for higher gas mileage in cars, more green public transportation and solar panels abundance in every roof. According to a Harvard study, exposure to air pollution may increase the mortality rate of Covid-19 patients and according to Helsinki-based Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air this decrease in air quality may reduce up to 11k  premature deaths. I hope this unintended action leading to unintended consequences will become permanent. I hope to see a cleaner, greener future, where we can save more lives and keep the planet healthy. I believe in 2050, my hopes would be a reality. I can see it now.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Sadie,

You are young and have a rich future ahead of you. I am retired and aiming for a high quality of cultural life and comfort with whatever time remains to me. I do not want to see a world whose elders sacrifice your future for their short-term needs and personal gain. So it’s up to you and me to speak out.

Dear Future Earth,

I promise to promote the growth of clean energy, like solar… For the sake of my grandchildren.

To my Dad,

I hope on this Father’s Day, my 24th birthday, and the rest of days, we remember that the most basic part of life is living happy with the ones we love. Acting every day against climate change will allow us to keep that simple piece of humanity.

Dear future Michelle,

As consumers, it is our duty to protest and force companies to be greener and avoid environmental damage, whether they are from the food industry or from any other production industry. It’s about time we start thinking greener.

Dear Samuel, Willa, and Ben,

To the core of my being, and only through the power of community, I will honor the voices of the youth who are pleading, “Don’t burn my future.” Samuel, Willa, and Ben, your little voices I know, will join that chorus soon enough.

Dear Ellis,

So, dear heart, I am doing everything I can as the situation worsens.

Dear Eleanor,

You are so small. So innocent. So beautiful. For you and for everyone else, I will try harder.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to drive less and walk more.

Salutations to whoever may be reading this,

I promise to do my part. I promise to be the change I want to see in the world, and I hope that you, reader, will do the same.

Dear Alyssa,

I pray that more and more fathers will realize that to love their children well, they have to love and respect the ecological systems around them too.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I’ll replace our lights with LED lights.

Dear Children,

I wish I had a crystal ball and could peep into it to see you all happy and safe in a world that nourishes you and that is also nourished by you, a world where the resources it provides are as valued as the people in it and not frittered away by greed and power.
