Dear Asher,

When I imagine your future, I imagine limitless possibilities, joy, love, and meaningful connections. I imagine you contributing to the world in ways that promote a level playing field, social justice, and positive change.

Your father and I worry about the way humans treat the earth. It’s why we have the cars we do, why we use the diapers we do for you, and why we eat the way we do. It’s why we try to recycle as much as possible, and compost, and buy used when we can. But we know there is still more we can do. We worry that we don’t do enough for climate change. We worry the world ignores climate change.

We hope to try to live more simply by buying less, growing more of our own food, talking to you about caring for the earth, and driving less.

All children deserve the opportunity for a meaningful, safe, and satisfied life. We hope our efforts to combat climate change and instill a love for the earth in you will help contribute to that.

your mama, Lizz

More Messages to the Future

To my dear son,

Last year most of the world’s reefs turned white at some point, but because it was underwater you and your friends didn’t see.

Dear Evan,

We want your future family to enjoy the same beautiful places we enjoyed.

To My Fellow Two-Spirits,

Thank you — Thank you — without you, I would not hear butterflies singing, without you, I would not understand black bear humor, or the creativity of jays planning their breakfast, without you, I would not feel flora whispers of long-lived wisdom on the back of my neck while sitting in Padmasana.

Dear Future Self,

More than getting through a global pandemic that has already taken hundreds of thousands of lives around the world, our true feat is even larger: to secure our long-term health and the health of the ecosystems upon which we depend for life. To do that, we have to cut our emissions in half in the next ten years, and continue to reduce it beyond that. And to succeed in that, we need to fundamentally shift the way we do EVERYTHING.

My dearest Paloma Bear,

I want the very best for you and for generations to come. There is only one planet earth. Your mommy and I will make a genuine effort to make an impact to protect it for you.

To our sweet grandson Caleb,

We want a safe and beautiful world for you, little Caleb, and for your children and grandchildren. We promise to do our part.

Dear Isaiah,

I am grateful for your soul, for your creativity, for your empathy. All these are precious treasures that you have to offer the world. They will help. I thank you for being in this world right now, so that you can offer these gifts at a time of transition.

Hey kiddo,

I’ll be here to tell you all the ways I have fought for the health of our home, and fought to protect all of the wide, open spaces for you to run in. When you’re old enough, we can fight together.

To my Children,

As you look through your window, I hope you will see a bright future. I hope you dream big, and that you have the courage, drive, and fortitude to do everything you can to achieve those dreams.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to use a reusable water bottle.

Dear People Of The Future,

It’s scary, this is the stuff you see in movies about the end of the world.

Dear Child,

Hope we get to have that snowball fight I always dreamed we’d have.
