Dear Aaron,

I’m writing days after you turned six months old. It’s hard to believe how quickly you’ve grown, yet I have mixed feelings about the world in which you are growing. We have a terrible, regressive administration in this country, and authoritarianism is on the rise globally. And even as the scientific consensus on climate change is clearer than ever, governments like ours ignore it and continue policies that imperil your future and that of your children.

Today, your Abba and I do our part to minimize our carbon footprint. We live in New York City, in a modest apartment with central heat for the building, and don’t own a car. We purchase our electricity from renewable resources via our service provider. We travel to work and to see friends on the subway, and we are members of a CSA, getting our fruits and vegetables, in season, from a local, woman-owned organic farm. We try not to buy more than we need and we are strict recyclers.

On a political level, we advocate to our elected leaders to support policies that raise the efficiency of cars and buildings and invest in power generation that has the least impact on the environment. We marched in the Climate Marches in New York City and Washington DC, and we will continue to stand up for this important value.

We hope that you understand the importance of caring for our planet and that you can make a difference.

Love you forever,
Daddy

More Messages to the Future

Dear future self,

I am writing this to keep myself accountable and push myself towards taking action towards a sustainable future. I hope children of the future can still appreciate the wonders that nature and all its beings have to offer, appreciate the beauty in the world around us.

Paz e bem

Dear Maddie,

Please know that I have tried very hard to be one of those people, to even make the smallest of changes in order to improve the world for you and your future.

Dear fantastic,

We as the human race are smarter than this struggle at hand and need to rise above large corporate interests and confusion on this topic.

to my dearest children,

Our future is being made now, and I promise to do everything in my power to make yours safe.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to pick up trash at every beach I visit 🙂 and to bike for local errands.

Dear Lucy,

The clock ticks, time passes, and the earth and all of its inhabitants move closer to dangerous boundaries we can dimly discern but cannot see clearly.

Dear Soren,

In this world that is changing before our eyes, I believe that is our task: standing unflinchingly on the side of love, connecting with others, and forging ahead together.

Greetings 2050 earthling,

Starting in 2015 I committed my life to sustainability.

Dear old dude Mårten,

I know that the 2019 version of me (today that is) wished and hoped for that I did all within my power to turn the world around without loosing sight on the beauty of being alive.

Dear Daughter,

Even when contemplating huge global-historical issues — especially then — it’s important to stay grounded in the present time and place, the specific here and now, and the minute affairs of everyday interpersonal relations.
