Dear Maxine,

In the year 1990, we already knew our climate was changing due to humans, but at that time many scientists were shy about raising the alarm, outside of academic publications and conferences.  We were also naive in thinking that if we showed everyone our evidence of the human connection, and more importantly the projections for 2030, 2050 and 2100, we’d start to see real change. We were wrong. People didn’t pay much attention, in part because they didn’t want to. Change is hard.

Two decades later, change was beginning. Scientists started talking to the general public and some policy makers suggested reform in how we generate energy. The People’s Climate March in 2014 demonstrated to the world that climate change was becoming an issue for everyone who cares about people and our planet.  A movement had started, although there were many challenges ahead.

I met your Mom in 2007 – she was a star student in my climate change course. We shared an optimism for making a difference, for using education to improve the environment, and for joining science and business for the good of the planet. In 2016, we started Green Ninja (www.greenninja.org), an educational enterprise that aimed to use formal education to create climate change solutions.

It’s now 2017 and we’ve got an amazing team of scientists, educators, artists and designers who together share a common goal – to reduce the impacts of climate change. Every day I’m inspired by the passion of people to create real change. And every day, I’m also inspired by your Mom, who works two jobs so she can help ensure a sustainable world for you.

Maxine, please know that there are many people, including our team at Green Ninja and your Mom, who are working hard to ensure a safe and healthy planet for the future. I hope we are successful.

More Messages to the Future

dear future people (:

I am writing this message to you guys. When I look outside my window today, I see a beautiful world that others and myself call “home sweet home.” The trees glimmering in warm sunlight, the air stirring a cool breeze, and the water flowing down rivers are parts of our home Mother Earth.

Dear Anabelle and Bruce,

My desire is for clean air, clean water, rich soil, and healthy nutritious food for you and all children always everywhere.

To my children – Chase, Maya and Harlan

I hope that we manage to change the system really soon, while there is still time. So that you are not left with the mess, and trying to fix something that you didn’t cause. I hope we figured out a way to be kind, and caring for others who will suffer more than us. A way to let go of the greed and look at ways we can help others rather than take from them.

Dear Tomorrow

I will become the change I wish to see in the world.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to use my reusable water bottle more often

Isabelle minha querida neta!

Nossa vida só tem qualidade se tem natureza ao nosso redor.

Dear My Future Child,

I want to sculpt a world for you where you can play outside without gas masks, an ocean to swim in without toxins, and a thick lively forest for you to wander.

My dearest Paloma Bear,

I want the very best for you and for generations to come. There is only one planet earth. Your mommy and I will make a genuine effort to make an impact to protect it for you.

Dear Tomorrow

I will get my roommates to be more environmentally friendly.

Dear Alba:

There is still a lot of beauty and I will do what I can to keep it from slipping away.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to work with my family and neighbors to reduce carbon output.

My dearest children Ameilia and Alivia,

I want you to hear the whispers of the seasons changing. The rustling of leaves as they gracefully cascade down from their limbs in the fall, birds singing in spring, and frogs that serenade the summer night.
