Dear Future Me,

I hope that you are doing well, and I hope that the planet is in livable condition. Unfortunately, I really don’t think it is. I know I’ve tried to live an environmentally friendly life, but I know you think I could have and should have done more. I hope you can forgive me for my ignorance and inability to start caring about the earth sooner. I also hope you can forgive me for not doing enough.

I took a sustainability class in 2017, which was really the first time I learned about how to live to save the place we live. I had already been living 20 years of my life hurting the earth. From then on, I tried my best to take care of this planet, for you and for your family, but it was never enough.

I worry that by the time you read this, the world will be in complete shambles. People aren’t changing their way of living enough, or fast enough, and I fear the damage we have done is irreversible. I wish people would think about you more; maybe they would realize there is more to life than just now. More to life than the newest shoes, a big t.v., a fancy car. Material things won’t help you, or save our planet. I wish we all understood this and took action sooner, but all we have is now.

I hope you continue to live in an ecofriendly way. I hope you consume only what you need, and I hope you have found your voice to spread awareness of the importance of living an environmentally friendly life. I’m sorry I couldn’t do more sooner, but I hope you always continue to do more and more to help our planet.

Sincerely,

Tess

Dear future generations,

It’s never too late to make a difference. Our actions have very real consequences. We can educate ourselves, learn from our mistakes, and take action. We can hold companies like big oil and big plastic accountable for their negative impacts on the environment. We can educate ourselves and others about what causes climate change and what actions we as individuals can take to lower our carbon footprints.
