Dear Daughter/Son,

I am writing you this letter on March 1st 2018. You probably won’t see this letter until you are all grown up and already have kids of your own, and by that time I hope it’s not too late. I am writing you this letter in hopes that you have followed after my footsteps in trying to preserve this beautiful Earth that our family has called home for thousands and thousands of years. Right now, the earth is starting to change due to global warming and if we don’t do anything about it, there will be serious consequences. Humans are producing more waste and carbon dioxide than ever before, and these harmful byproducts are being released into the atmosphere. Because of this, the protective layers of our Earth that are necessary for many species to survive such as the ozone layer are getting depleted. Because of this, more sunlight is hitting the Earth and causing global warming, the extinction of species, and severe weather patterns.

The Earth is getting so warm that the polar bears will no longer have any ice to live on and they are dying of exhaustion because they can’t swim indefinitely. The sea level is rising, hurricanes and storms are getting more severe and more frequent, and people are running out of fresh water. Because of human waste and production, we are throwing off earth’s natural cycles and slowly killing our mother Earth and everything that inhabits it.

Although most of society knows what we are doing to the Earth, people aren’t making a big enough effort to slow down this destruction. I am and have been making a conscious effort to leave less of a harmful impact on this Earth by researching the effects of global warming and spreading the word through conversation while simultaneously cutting back on my ecological footprint. I just want you to know that I am doing all that I can so that you can live a safe and healthy life, just like myself and my mother and her mother have lived. I hope that you get to experience all the natural wonders of this world. I hope you get to see polar bears somewhere other than in a history book. I hope that you have enough resources to live a happy life and I hope that you understand that your mother did the best she could to give you and your kids a healthy and beautiful life.

Happy 34th birthday my son.

To laugh at our efforts as they were on such a small scale, too small some would say to make a difference, and then smile when we think about the number families just like ours that did the same thing.
 

Dear Grandchild,

I now feel less overwhelmed and powerless, and I am determined to fight for our planet and your future.
 

Dear future generations,

It’s never too late to make a difference. Our actions have very real consequences. We can educate ourselves, learn from our mistakes, and take action. We can hold companies like big oil and big plastic accountable for their negative impacts on the environment. We can educate ourselves and others about what causes climate change and what actions we as individuals can take to lower our carbon footprints.
 

To My Future Children,

I hope by 2050, our society has taken initiative to be producing energy solely through renewable sources.
 

My Dear Grandchildren,

In writing this letter to you, I am searching for ways to make my connection and commitment to you more present in my current experience
 

Future Message to Earth,

Hope there will be no more droughts,
And no more pollution with which we fought,
Regarding every human should be taught,
Ensuring that we uniformly follow these thoughts.
