Dear future me and family,

I took a sustainability class my first semester of college without really knowing what the class would entail. I’m forever thankful for how eye opening and humbling this class was to me. For me, particularly, this class gave me a chance to become more self-conscious about my own individual impact on the world every day. Day to day I find myself thinking about my water and electricity use, and my trash accumulation more than I ever thought I could.

It’s heartbreaking to see the rate at which we are killing of our home, yet so many people are not aware of this. It’s 2017 and Donald Trump is president. If you haven’t learned about him yet, don’t worry I can fill you in. Mr. Trump doesn’t believe in climate change. All his years as a scientist in his Trump empire led him to believe that climate change is all a hoax and that the Unites States should withdraw from the Paris agreement, which we did. It blows my mind to see the ignorance amongst our society today.

It makes me sad knowing that the beautiful world I know today might not be the same for you guys as it was for me. My hopes for the future and for our world is that people will finally open their eyes and allow themselves to see what our world has become. We are a world that takes too much and gives back so little, stripping the earth day by day of resources it will no longer be able to supply in years to come.

My promise to myself and to you is to live a simplistic and conscious life, and hopefully you are able to see the beauty of the world we live in. I pledge my promise to you that I will try to live a lifestyle that is suitable for our planet and try to get as many people as I can to do the same. I pray that you are able to enjoy the world the way that I have been able to gratefully enjoy it.

More Messages to the Future

My Mini & Lou,

Since I first sat down with these words, a pandemic has erupted. Racial violence is reaching a fever pitch and protests are raging across the nation. It feels like the planet is succumbing to entropy, slipping further into chaos. But I write to you from a time of shifting tides.

To my darling ones,

And it’s not that I don’t care. I care deeply. For you three, and the families I hope you will have one day; for the many beautiful places I have had the privilege to know, places which take my breath away, that fill my heart with a bursting joy and connectedness to something so much greater than I, places I know may be quite different when you are my age

To what we’ve overcome.

The first step would be in overcoming ourselves. Because whether we end up fading into obscurity, or thriving in prosperity, we will overcome ourselves.

Dear Jamie and Jason,

My inspiration was the two of you. It started with thinking about the world you were inheriting and what your future was going to be like. But then you taught me how important it is to listen to you – to listen to young people.

To my children,

I hope that the fervor that is building continues to build and spread and that the world has made progress to minimize the effects of our past actions.

Dear Future Generations,

I promise to make as many changes to my life as possible to make yours as great as mine.

To My Future Children,

I hope by 2050, our society has taken initiative to be producing energy solely through renewable sources.

Dear Future Sami Lee,

Everyone currently in life laughs and yells save the bees. We were a bee this year for Halloween and Lucy even came up with a great slogan “get with it honey”.

My grandchildren,

I promise to do my very best to educate your parents as best I can.

Dear Nafia,

I also hope that your previous prayers have been answered. The way you wanted to create green jobs for your fellow city dwellers have been fulfilled already.

Dear Madeline, Ava, and Harper,

What I wish most for you girls is that the care you have shown each other would extend to the big wide world around you.

Dear World,

I vow that I will try to make a difference every day, so that you may enjoy the world as I have.
