Dear future generations,

I am writing you from November 2016 and things are pretty interesting. We are currently signed on to the Paris Climate Agreement, but we just elected Donald Trump as president. Sadly, he has said he wants to pull the United States from this Paris Climate Agreement which would greatly decrease the incentives for many other countries to stay committed to it. Our society is currently heavily dependent on fossil fuels for nearly all of our energy needs. There is a big push to transition to renewable energy but it is being squashed by the fossil fuel industry and by elected officials who are identify as climate change deniers but who are really just paid by the fossil fuel industry to keep us dependent on fossil fuels. While all this might seem very depressing and even though it’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to climate change and the very real threat it poses to our humanity, there is hope. We still have an opportunity to stop extreme climate change if we transition to 100% renewable energy, start consuming less commercial products, eat less meat, and actively live in a more sustainable way. I sincerely hope and pray that for your sake we can accomplish these things and more because your well-being depends on it. I can remember going to the Florida Keys with my dad on a week-long sailing trip with my boy scout troop. We were able to live on and operate a 40-foot sailboat for a week. We got the opportunity to sail to small deserted island in and around the keys, as well as snorkel with a great abundance of colorful fish and exotic coral reefs. These areas were protected but not immune to the effect of climate change. My hope for you is that you can have equal experiences with nature that I was able to have with my dad.

As I’m sitting here trying to think of the best words to say to you all, I am thinking of one major thing: that I can only hope that you all get to experience the incredible beauty created by our planet.
 

To my future children,

It’s not enough to just recycle. I will sign petitions and call my local representatives. I will also engage in conversations about climate change – even with people with whom I don’t see eye-to-eye.
 

Future Message to Earth,

Hope there will be no more droughts,
And no more pollution with which we fought,
Regarding every human should be taught,
Ensuring that we uniformly follow these thoughts.
 

To my children,

I am working with 350.org on shutting down the coal and unconventional gas industries in our country because I cannot think of a more direct way to protect you, the food, water and biodiversity we all love and rely on.
 

Dear Kids,

I know it’s long past time to wake up. You deserve a future in which drought, famine, and war are not all your children ever know; the choices my generation makes now will determine your future.
 

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will encourage everyone to adopt a plant-based diet. Good for our health, the animals and the planet.
