Dear Future Baby,

Hello my love of my life. If you are reading this now in the year 2050, I will be 56 years old. Maybe you are a bit older where you can comprehend this letter or maybe you are still a tiny baby just learning to say “mama” or “dada”. I am forever grateful that you have come into my life no matter how this world has turned out to be.

I hope you are swinging on the swings outside or running around chasing a butterfly against the bright sun on your chubby cheeks. If you are not, I am so sorry that I could not anything sooner to help you live a beautiful life that you deserve on our planet. As of right now, our climate is getting warmer and sadly, we are too late to go back and fix it. We can only now adapt to this new, hot life here on Earth, and hope that our planet will not turn its back on us. I hope to learn more about our ever-changing climate so I can hope to tell you more in your future.

You may or may not meet Grandma, but if you do, you will soon come to realize that she is quite stubborn. Your Grandma pushed me in many directions that seemed logical and easy. To her it was perfect and thought I should do what she said because to her it was right. Going into college and pursuing my degree in business was far from what I always wanted to do. Your daddy was the first love of my life and there were many times where we just wanted to run away from everything and live on a farm or up in the mountains so far from everything.

Before pursuing what your Daddy and I wanted to do, I wanted to finish up college. To make your grandma happy I started my college career down the business path, however, I came to quickly realize that it never interested me and I could not do this for the rest of my life. At this point your Mama was lost, not knowing what to do with herself. But then she realized something. She has a love for this planet that we all share. So she decided to pursue with an environmental mindset through college.

Your Daddy and I always talked about what the future will hold for our precious baby like you. Sadly, this was not the outcome that we had hoped for. Our generation is filled with hatred and selfishness and hurt that we forget that there is only one home for all of us. Am I too guilty of being selfish and pouring so much hatred into my heart that I become blinded for the hope I have for you.

All I ask is this: that you will learn to forgive Mama. Mama has made some poor decisions in her life and she has learned from her mistakes. But she is not the only one who has hurt you. In this year 2016, there are innocent people dying because they have no food, no clean water, or the heat has become unbearable. It is also the people who look to protect us from things that hurt us who are also hurting this planet that I want for you.

I promise to do the best that I can in protecting what the future holds for you. I don’t know if I will be there to watch you take your first step, say your first word, eat your first big kid food, see you graduate, or have a family of your own, but I want you to know one thing. I love you no matter what and everything that I do to protect the future, I do it for you.

All my love,
Your Mama
