Dear Alex and Vivian,

When I was a teenager I first crossed an Icefield with the Juneau Icefield Research Program. I had only camped once before, so this experience was formative. Traveling back last summer as faculty filled me with such joy.  Then sadness registered.  Valley walls showed the scrape of ice that once existed.

I won’t be paralyzed. The consequences of climate change are speeding forward affecting real people and wild spaces. I am your advocate for the world you deserve in my teaching and in our community. I will use these roles to help make change. This is my most important work.

Love,

Mom

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to clean the earth.

Dear Tomorrow,

We only have 11 years left until the damage done by climate change is irreversible.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to pick up trash at every beach I visit 🙂 and to bike for local errands.

Dear Kids,

My mistake was thinking I needed to give you more to be a good Mom. Recently your aunt asked me what my favorite toy was growing up. I gulped, I didn’t have one- it was the outdoors, sliding down a ravine of leaves with my Dad, skiing and camping. Today is October 12th, 2021 and I am still going to be giving you a lot, it’s going to look a little different – love, experiences, education and a healthy planet.

Queridos filhos Heloísa e Henzo,

Tenho muito orgulho da minha função (agente de fiscalização ambiental do Acre) pois é através dela que posso dar um pouco do meu suor, para que no futuro ambos possam ter um lugar melhor para viver.

Dear Darlings,

I commit to you to change one thing a year in our lifestyle to live more environmentally friendly.

Dear Ezmae,

As I write this, I consider giving up as it sometimes seems that all is lost. But then I think of you.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will do whatever I can to protect and preserve mother Earth for future generations.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to ride a bike and take a smart train.

Dear Kids,

I know it’s long past time to wake up. You deserve a future in which drought, famine, and war are not all your children ever know; the choices my generation makes now will determine your future.

Dear Tomorrow,

I will do my part to help ensure that there is an Earth left when we are done borrowing it.

Cari nipoti,

Siamo nel 2017 e vi assicuro che sto facendo tutto il possibile per rendere questo pianeta un posto migliore.
